Good Shoulders Gone Bad

Here we have the perfect shoulder for a rural/suburban road with high speeds and increasing traffic. It is at least eight feet wide, clean and smooth. Great Place to ride eh?

Look what happens just around the curve. When they retopped the road, they didn't retop the entire shoulder. Now it has a dangerous drop-off.

At intersections the shoulder is now lost altogether. This is especially dangerous because the road design causes conflict between two classes of road users. Cyclists are forced to take the lane on a road where average speeds are over 50 mph. Bad Design. Bad Engineering. Bad Planning. Bad Execution. Bad Road.
