Advocacy:
The Pearland Cycling Club shares the goals of dramatically increasing the numbers of bicyclists and pedestrians as we simultaneously decrease the number of crashes involving bicyclists and pedestrians.
We will accomplish these goals by fostering improvements in Education, Engineering, and Encouragement.
Education: The Pearland Cycling Club supports:
Texas Bicycle Coalition's Safe Routes to School and Supercyclist programs.
League of American Bicyclists Bike Ed Cycling Education Series
Engineering: The Pearland Cycling Club supports:
Complete Streets: Where all users feel comfortable using our transportation corridors.
Development of a Pearland Bikeways program that will lead to a functional bicycling transportation
system for Pearland, and Northern Brazoria County.
Encouragement: The Pearland Cycling Club supports:

Why we should be concerned:
Regional Transportation Projects (.pdf)
What we need:
• Smooth, safe roads that connect from where we are to where we want to go. These make good cycling routes.
• Continuous shoulders and wide outside lanes provide adequate safety for trained cyclists.
• Share the Road signs enhance driver awareness.
Common Roadblocks to safe, enjoyable cycling:
• Outside lanes less than 14 feet wide.
• Shoulders that disappear at intersections, or because they were not adequately maintained.
• Failure to maintain shoulders.
• Roads that deteriorate at the edges because no shoulder was used during the original construction.
• Bike lanes that are narrow, poorly maintained, next to curbs that trap detritus (99% of all bike lanes).
• Rumble strips that are too wide (over 4") and too deep (over 1/4"), placed without adequate breaks at intersections, and placed on roads that don't qualify for them under state and national guidelines.
• "Chip Seal" surfaces are too rough for most cyclists.
